For this event, I was inspired by the 25th anniversary of Disney’s Aladdin.
All the decorations were supposed to be very colourful, just like the movie. I also took inspiration from Persian weddings and the stories of the Arabian Nights. As our budget for these events has gone down and colourful fabrics are rather expensive – even when checking the places where you’d expect to find something on sale – I left those out and concentrated on the usual combination of crafts and bargains. I also used some of my own decorative items, some pieces from previous events and a vintage Sari I found in a vintage pop up store in my neighbourhood. That store has closed down in the meantime, but the Sari made a gorgeous background to our “photo booth” corner in the office.
I made golden bracelets out of toilet paper rolls, macaroni and gold spray paint – they looked great! I also spray painted some glass bottles and fabric flowers in gold and turquoise and lined pearls on strings. Combined with gold foil chocolate coins, some glass crystals and a treasure chest they made a fantastic Cave of Wonders! For the photo booth, I made themed props out of coloured card stock. The spray painted plastic flutes from the Beauty and the Beast event turned into glittering goblets with the help of some glue on flatback rhinestones.

The food was the star of the event, and I planned to make it look, feel and taste authentic and to pull the whole theme together. My colleagues and I made a fantastic feast and for the first time, there was no meat on offer, all of the food was vegetarian and a lot of it was vegan – and there were no complaints. π Everything was really flavourful, from the different salads and couscous over the dips to the desserts, from the homemade Persian rosewater and pistachio fudge to the vegan Turkish delight. We also had 3 different Chai teas, almond milk and a rose tea on offer.
Our next events were a Wear it Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness and a Dia de los Muertos themed Halloween to celebrate the Disney film Coco. It certainly was a colourful autumn/winter!
