I met Y when I started sitting her cats. Our very first meeting we clicked and she told me about her wedding planning and the things she had already organised and booked and the things she was struggling with. So I told her about my experience with event planning and weddings and not long after that she booked me as her personal wedding assistant.
During follow-up meetings we discussed in detail her needs and friction points and made plans how to best tackle these. For tasks that she wanted to tackle herself, we agreed on deadlines and check-in dates and I would follow up and check in with her how it was going and if she needed any assistance. In the meantime I would research different options for decor and get back to her with my results and any recommendations. We went to Hobbycraft together and visited the stylist who would set up her booked venue on the day and picked out items for hire. Among those were a wooden stand for the seating plan and holders for her table numbers on which I then based my designs for the seating plan and table numbers respectively. I also made a mini version of a painted acrylic sign with vinyl so that she would be able to pick the colours for her welcome sign – it’s so difficult to imagine what a paint colour will look like from the bottle and which vinyl you’ll like the look of most!

One of the ideas we had was to decorate a photo backdrop with giant paperflowers so I researched different options and mocked one up. In the end the paperflowers were replaced with hundreds of origami cranes that Y and some family members and friends folded. They were hung in rows from the barn ceiling and also scattered on tables and looked lovely!

We discussed the different options for menus for the wedding day and as they had chosen family style dinner (different dishes on big serving platters for each table to share), Y decided on a giant menu that stood in the middle of the barn which I designed and which we had professionally printed, same as the “Unplugged Ceremony” sign for the ceremony. One of our last tasks in the run up to the wedding was the packing of favour bags for each one of her guests.
As I wasn’t needed at the wedding venue itself, I got to spent the day of the wedding with Y’s adorable cats instead. Y and I stayed in touch, not just because of her cats, and she and A were guests at my own wedding in 2024.
